Under the Sale of Goods act, all items sold must be of merchantable quality. That is unbroken and fit for purpose. I cannot see any reputable merchant denying liability, but if they do you have a choice of Trading Standards or the small claims court. Regarding the compensation regarding fuel and time, in the first instance the merchant will resist this claim, but if you make enough noise in the showroom, you will find that you will get a gesture of goodwill.
